Basement waterproofing is a technique that prevents the water from entering in the basement of your home. While you construct a home and make an area below the level of the ground then you need to take certain measures in order to prevent that area from getting moist frequently.
There are various methods used to stop the water from entering into your basement but out of all those various techniques there three major techniques that would help you in keeping your basement dry. These three techniques must be studied carefully before deciding on to which technique is the best in your situation.
Interior sealers –
Interior sealers are not effective and do not provide permanent safeguard from the access of water into your basement where hydrostatic pressure is available. Such sealers work best against high atmospheric humidity thus preventing spalling (a state where due to constant and high humidity or moisture concrete surfaces peels off. Therefore you must understand the state of your basement first before selecting a particular method to make your basement waterproof because in case you select the wrong one it will not be effective and you will be facing the same problem after sometime and the entire money you had spent on it will go to waste.
Interior water drainage –
This technique is not basically accepted as a waterproofing technique but is still commonly accepted as an effective measure of keeping your basement waterproof. Through this technique underground water is drained out with a PVC pipe or French drain system into a pump which sucks out the water from the foundation and underneath the basement floor. This waterproofing system is very handy as it can be installed with a do-it-yourself kit also and is widely used during extensive rain and any other flooding which may harm your basement and you need to manually pump out water to save your foundation. Some of the interior drainage systems are recognized and approved by the building code as they can control basement water in the most effective manner.
Exterior drainage system –
Exterior waterproofing is a method by which water does not enter the foundation of the building or home. This prevents rusting and molding of materials used while building not only the basic foundation but also the walls. The law of IBC (International Building Code) only recognizes the exterior waterproofing method to be the most safest to stop the water from entering into the seams and walls thus preventing damage to the structure.
All the above types of water drainage system are effective and recognized by the IBC. Before selecting a particular way of saving the foundation of your home from water you must study all the methods thoroughly and then apply anyone of them which is more suitable and most cost effective so that you enjoy the benefits of the drainage system for a very longer period of time so that your home is durable and does not give you trouble every now and then.
